—WITH EMILY KO OF SIT & WONDER
Sit & Wonder is a jewellery brand that fulfils all your adornment dreams. Timeless, minimal and refined, they are the delicate treasures you’ll want to live in each day – and without a second thought. We met with the lovely gem designer and founder, Emily Ko, to talk about her labour of love and where she finds her inspiration.
HOW DID YOU FALL INTO JEWELLERY DESIGN?
I fell into it after I quit my previous life as a financial analyst in a corporate setting. I had always loved jewellery and wanted to do something creative in my career. After taking a career break and doing a short course in jewellery making, I completely fell in love with it! My favourite part about jewellery is the fact that it’s steeped in so many cultures and traditions. It’s one of those ancient arts that has been linked to not only adornment, but the tradition of passing down heirlooms, commemorating special moments and has acted as a vehicle of wealth and value for thousands of years.
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT SIT & WONDER’S CURRENT SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES?
Ethical and sustainable practices are something that we are striving to improve upon over time. It's actually quite a complex topic and there are many challenges in the jewellery industry, but we try to implement certain practices where possible. We take a 'slow' approach to fashion, so our collections are designed to be timeless and crafted in high-quality sterling silver and solid gold to encourage longevity, in contrast with the disposable nature of fashion jewellery.
We manufacture in small batches to reduce wastage and use recycled metals regularly throughout the process. Scrap metal is also refined and re-used. Most of our packaging is now recyclable or re-useable, and we've reduced the size of our mailing boxes and jewellery boxes to minimise our carbon footprint. Lastly, our pieces are ethically made in India by a family-run business that pays fair wages and supports their local community. A smaller portion of our collections are made by trusted local jewellers in Sydney.

ARE THERE ANY PERSONAL PIECES OF JEWELLERY THAT HOLD SENTIMENTAL VALUE TO YOU?
Yes, quite a few actually! I have some 24k gold pieces that I’ve received from my family over time. It’s a common tradition in Taiwanese culture (where my parents are from) to receive 24k gold jewellery to commemorate moments like special birthdays. They’re too soft to wear everyday but I keep them in a special place. I also have a white gold ring that belonged to my uncle and some statement cocktail rings from my grandmother, whom have both passed away. I keep those pieces as a reminder of them.
WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I might be inspired by a certain mood, theme or shape that influences my design process. For example, my first collection was influenced by the ellipsis, representing the moment of pause before I decided to start the Sit & Wonder label. My second collection was influenced by memories of pieces from my mother’s jewellery box and the idea of nostalgic keepsakes. The third collection was influenced by the overall theme of flow and fluidity, expressed through teardrop and water droplet silhouettes.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP PICKS FROM THE NEW JAG COLLECTION?
I’m obsessed with the Rae Rigid Straight Jeans in Mid Wash – they are the perfect cut and wash to go with everything. I also love the Knit Hoodie in Camel – the colour is perfect and the texture is so soft and comfortable. I can definitely see all the pieces pairing beautifully with my Sit & Wonder jewels!
